HomeAid Renovates at SafeHouse Outreach Service Center

Restroom renovation provides dignity for individuals experiencing homelessness

Atlanta, GA – In late December 2017, HomeAid Atlanta helped to complete a total renovation of the restroom facilities at SafeHouse Outreach’s downtown service center and headquarters.  SafeHouse Outreach is an Atlanta nonprofit with a mission to affect real change in the lives of those experiencing homelessness by providing a hand-up, not just a hand-out.

HomeAid Atlanta Builder Captain Vince Longo of Vincent Longo Custom Builders headed up construction efforts for this much-needed project. SafeHouse provides dinner every night for approximately 150 people experiencing homelessness, and the bathroom facilities were not keeping up. HomeAid’s completed project now provides additional space and dignity to those receiving assistance at SafeHouse.

This project marked Vince Longo’s third time partnering with HomeAid Atlanta. In 2015, Vince served as a volunteer Builder Captain for a total renovation and expansion with ADA upgrade of office facilities at Roswell’s The Drake House.  In late 2016 and early 2017, he led a series of HomeAid Care Days at SafeHouse with the Whitefield Academy Men’s Fraternity.

HomeAid provided a savings of approximately 82% of the total cost of the bathroom project.  Interceramic Tile & Stone Gallery generously donated 100% of the tile to help make this project possible.

HomeAid and Mortgage Bankers Association of Georgia Partner for Care Day

Groups prepare transitional home for residents in southwest Atlanta

Atlanta, GA – On Monday, December 11, HomeAid Atlanta partnered with the Mortgage Bankers Association of Georgia (MBAG) for a HomeAid Care Day at Jesus Set the Captive Free (JSCF) in southwest Atlanta.  Care Days are HomeAid’s volunteer workdays during which homeless service providers receive repairs and upgrades at little or no cost to them.  MBAG and HomeAid volunteers completed final tasks at JSCF’s newly renovated triplex.  To get the units ready for move-in, the hardworking group cleaned, painted, and installed blinds.  Sherwin-Williams provided paint donations. This Care Day provided a savings of approximately $2,000 for JSCF.

HomeAid volunteer Builder Captain James MacDowell of Unique Homes and Renovations renovated the triplex for JSCF earlier this year.  This was HomeAid’s second renovation for JSCF, whose mission is to empower homeless and previously incarcerated men, including veterans, with education, emotional, and faith-based support.  The triplex will serve as a transitional living facility as residents work rebuild their lives.

MBAG’s Care Day was held in conjunction with HomeAid’s Stock the House Drive, which garnered donations of housewares for JSCF, including dishes, small appliances, towels, and much more.  Many community members contributed to the Drive, donating approximately $2,000 in merchandise.  The collected items will help provide a warm welcome for future residents.  

Alexandra Radford, co-chair of MBAG’s Lend-A-Hand Committee said, “We absolutely loved partnering with HomeAid Atlanta as our charity beneficiary this year.  HomeAid was both timely and flexible in coordinating the Care Day and event promotions with us. We received so much more than we gave at the Care Day! It was such a bonding experience to be able to give back to our community alongside the people we partner with every day in the real estate industry.  We welcome the opportunity to partner with HomeAid Atlanta again, and would recommend them to other associations evaluating charities to support.”

Paran Homes Launches Toys for Tots Drives Throughout Atlanta

Regional Homebuilder Now Accepting New, Unwrapped Toys at Corporate Office and all Active Communities in Atlanta

Dan O’Dwyer Tackles Second Project as Volunteer Build Captain For Drake House Village.

The Drake House in Roswell, Georgia provides single mothers and their children in the North Metro Atlanta area short term housing while providing them educational, empowerment and mentoring programs that will help them to become financially self-sufficient and contributing citizens to their Communities.  Through the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association’s designated Charity, Home-Aid, Dan O’Dwyer of O’Dwyer Properties has volunteered to lead a total renovation of two existing eight-unit apartment buildings, more than doubling the Drake House’s capacity to serve homeless woman and their children.  This increase from 44 beds to 100 beds will afford the Drake House extended housing capacity for successful graduates for up to 24 months. “My goal is to save half the normal expenses for the renovation,” O’Dwyer told guests at the groundbreaking.

This will be the second Drake House volunteer project for Dan O’Dwyer, a former President of Homeaid. In 2006 he led a total renovation of two existing eight-unit apartment buildings, helping to give the Drake House its first crisis housing.  For Dan, building homes and giving back to the Community go hand in hand. His goal has always been to leave the world a better place and is reflected in his volunteer work and Company ethics. Cobb Christmas is a non-profit, non-denominational organization, dedicated to helping low-income and working-poor families of Cobb County during the holiday season. The organization, fully run by volunteers, provides gifts from infants to children up to fifteen years old. HOMEAID ATLANTA CELEBRATES GROUNDBREAKING OF THE DRAKE VILLAGE

Renovation project to more than double capacity at Roswell women’s shelter

Roswell, GA – On Friday, October 6, HomeAid Atlanta and The Drake House celebrated the groundbreaking of The Drake Village with volunteer Builder Captain Dan O’Dwyer of O’Dwyer Homes. The Drake Village is a renovation of two eight-unit apartment buildings located on the property adjacent to The Drake House's existing crisis housing complex. When complete, the new facility will more than double The Drake House's capacity to serve homeless women and their children, going from 44 beds to 100 beds.

This will be HomeAid’s third project with The Drake House, and Dan O'Dwyer's second. In 2006, Mr. O'Dwyer led a total renovation of two existing eight-unit apartment buildings with HomeAid, the first crisis housing ever offered by The Drake House. In 2015, Vincent Longo of Vincent Longo Custom Builders and HomeAid completed a 1,000 square foot expansion of The Drake Center, adding a "mom classroom" and teen center. The 2015 project also included a complete renovation of staff offices for ADA compliance.

The Drake House Executive Director, Kathy Swahn shared her excitement over new project, "The Drake Village will allow us to double our capacity and offer extended housing for an additional 24 months to our successful graduates. By offering an affordable housing option at a time when market rents are escalating in our community, our mothers and children will be further stabilized and able to have program support and budget counseling. This is our third partnership with HomeAid Atlanta, and with the experience of Dan O'Dwyer having renovated our first sixteen units in 2006, we know he has the expertise and heart for this work. We are very grateful to be working with Dan again!"

HomeAid Atlanta, founded in 2001, is a nonprofit organization that builds new lives for homeless families and individuals through housing and community outreach. HomeAid works in partnership with the building industry, as well as community building organizations, to assist people experiencing homelessness. To date, HomeAid Atlanta has completed over 85 housing, remodel and care day projects at locations that serve victims of domestic violence, teen mothers, veterans and more.
