“Active Involvement Is Essential for Growth”
ATLANTA - Jim Chapman, president of Jim Chapman Communities and Jim Chapman Fine Homes in Atlanta, was recently installed as Second Vice Chairman of the 50+ Housing Council Board of Trustees of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). He will be the Chairman in 2016.
Still several years away from his own 50th birthday, Chapman determined early on in his career that he wanted to serve on local, state and national boards and committees within the housing industry.
“As a home builder and developer of a wide variety of neighborhoods, including luxury home and active adult communities, it is important to me that I give back to our industry,” says Chapman. “I am honored to take on a variety of leadership roles and share my ideas and my vision, and help set direction and policies that may affect homeowners and home builders for years to come.”
In his current national position on the Board of Trustees of the NAHB 50+ Housing Council, Chapman is in charge of their 2015 50+ Awards Ceremony in Las Vegas, and he fully expects that more home builders, architects and designers than ever before will enter their product for recognition during this nationwide event.
“Participating in this national 50+ Awards Ceremony in 2015, either as an entrant or as an attendee, will give 50+ Housing Council members great exposure throughout the industry,” he notes. “There will be lots of networking opportunities with other home builders from all over the country. Make plans now to be at our 2015 Awards Ceremony in February! Come meet other experts who are just as passionate about building fabulous homes and communities that are especially targeted to the fast-growing active adult and senior markets,” invites Chapman.
Chapman recently served in 2011 as Chairman of the Board of the Atlanta 50+ Housing Council of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association (GAHBA) and is a current board member. According to Chapman, “Being a member of the 50+ Housing Council on both a local and a national level offers outstanding opportunities to promote your brand and learn from others.” He explains that the local 50+ Housing Council is in the process of completing a sophisticated new website that will be a great sales and educational tool for 50+ home builders.
“If they are a member of their local HBA and the 50+ Housing Council, then that builder can list their communities and homes on this website, as well as in the online directory, and we will also be able to promote them as a featured builder,” he notes. “Can you imagine any better way to advertise your new community and your expertise in this booming market? Just think of the benefits, exposure and credibility you can generate from joining the local, state and national councils / associations!”
Statewide throughout Georgia, Chapman is a Founding Member and the initial Chairman of the ALL Home Program, a voluntary certification program that the Home Builders Association of Georgia (HBAG) is rolling out in 2014.
ALL stands for “A Livable Lifestyle” and encourages homebuilders to build and certify new homes that are truly accessible, by promoting universal design, accessibility, visibility features, and innovative design options that can be incorporated into new and renovated houses, benefiting people of all ages and abilities.
As with everything he tackles, Chapman is fully committed to the success of the new ALL Home Program and makes time for presentations to professional trade associations and groups all over Georgia. “We have designed the ALL Home Program to be easily embraced by builders as well as consumers, for all prices points and all home types. We want to spread the word and get many home builders on board – and create a demand with homebuyers who will be encouraged to select the home that fits their specific needs.”
In order for a home to be certified as a true ALL Home, it has to have at least one full bathroom, one bedroom, a kitchen and an entertainment area on the main floor. In addition, circulation requirements include an accessible path, with no steps and with a minimum of a 32-inch clear passage space connecting all spaces on the main floor, and all elements within the spaces required above. Also, all passage doors need to have a clear opening of at least 32 inches.

As an active member of the NAHB, Chapman is one of a select number of Georgia Gold Key Club members of BUILD-PAC, or Builders United in Legislative Decisions Political Action Committee, the association’s political arm. BUILD-PAC helps elect the most qualified pro-housing, pro-business candidates to federal office - on both sides of the aisle.
“I strongly support the efforts of BUILD-PAC in Washington,” notes Chapman. “This is an effective way to open doors on Capitol Hill to ensure that housing remains a key driver of our economy. Jointly, we can target specific regulations that may benefit or limit our industry’s recovery.”
“I am sincerely interested in promoting and preserving the home building industry. As a home builder, it is of vital importance to contribute my time, money and energy on a variety of boards and committees, and I invite my colleagues to get involved as well,” says Chapman. “As home builders, we provide the most basic of American dreams, to own your own home. That’s a pretty big responsibility – and it brings me great joy to be able to do my part.”
